Based on your individual needs, your Consultant will develop a personalised treatment plan, which may involve surgery or other non-surgical approaches. Maxillofacial and Facial Plastic Surgeon
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon
In the UK, maxillofacial surgeons (formally known as oral and maxillofacial) and oral surgeons undergo different training. An oral surgeon is a qualified dentist who focuses on oral/dental surgery and smaller office-based procedures. A maxillofacial surgeon is qualified as both a medical doctor and a dentist who also routinely undertakes the full remit of oral surgery but has a more extensive training background, additionally specialising in more complex and larger surgeries (for pathology/diseases of the head and neck, facial plastic surgery and complex facial reconstruction, and management of jaw deformity corrective surgery). Maxillofacial surgeons obtain their primary dental and medical degrees, followed by fellowships from one of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons in both dental surgery and surgery in general. This culminates with the Board Exit FRCS (OMFS), thus enabling them to hold consultant posts in the UK. Their names appear on both the Oral Surgery Specialist List held by the General Dental Council (GDC) as well as the Maxillofacial Specialist List held by the General Medical Council (GMC).
Maxillofacial surgery can offer significant improvements in pain relief, function, and aesthetics.
As with any surgery, maxillofacial procedures carry potential risks, such as bleeding, infection, nerve damage, and complications with anaesthesia. Your surgeon will discuss these risks in detail during your consultation.
Recovery time varies depending on the specific procedure. You can expect some discomfort, swelling, and bruising initially. Your surgeon will provide detailed postoperative instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.
If you’re experiencing persistent pain, swelling, or problems in your face, mouth, jaw, or neck, it’s advisable to consult a maxillofacial surgeon for evaluation and treatment recommendations.
