Colonoscopy

Medicana Health Group: Comprehensive Colonoscopy Services

Understanding Colonoscopy: A Clear View of Your Colon Health

A colonoscopy is a vital procedure that allows our expert gastroenterologists to examine the lining of your large intestine (colon) for any abnormalities. This procedure is crucial for early detection and prevention of colorectal cancer, as well as diagnosing other conditions affecting your digestive health.

What Happens During a Colonoscopy?

We prioritize your comfort throughout the procedure. You’ll be offered a sedative to help you relax. Once comfortable, your consultant will gently insert a thin, flexible tube with a camera (colonoscope) through your anus.

  • Clear Visualization: A small amount of air is introduced to inflate the colon, providing clear views of the lining.
  • Tissue Sampling & Polyp Removal: If any abnormalities like polyps are detected, your consultant can safely remove them or take tissue samples for further analysis.

Potential Risks and Recovery

Although colonoscopy is a safe and well-tolerated procedure, it’s important to be aware of potential risks, which your consultant will discuss with you beforehand.

  • Recovery: Most patients can return to their normal activities the next day. You may experience some mild bloating or cramping, but this typically subsides quickly.

FAQs - Colonoscopy

Colonoscopy is recommended for screening for colorectal cancer, investigating symptoms like blood in your stool or changes in bowel habits, and diagnosing inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).

You will receive detailed instructions on bowel preparation, which typically involves dietary changes and laxatives to cleanse your colon.

Most patients experience minimal discomfort during the procedure due to the use of sedation. You may feel some bloating or cramping afterward, but this usually subsides quickly.

Complications are rare but can include bleeding, perforation of the colon, and adverse reactions to sedation. Your consultant will discuss these risks with you.

Most people can return to their usual activities the day after the procedure. However, if you had sedation, you’ll need to avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours.
