Mr. Somers completed his postgraduate training in some of the UK’s most prestigious academic surgical units, including Leeds, Cambridge, Bristol, and St Mary’s Hospital in London. His international experience includes working as a Professor of Surgery in Hong Kong and a Consultant Senior Lecturer in Leeds, where he contributed to cutting-edge surgical research and education.

Born in London, Mr. Somers attended The Latymer School in North London. He pursued his medical degree at the University of Leeds, graduating in 1986 with an additional BSc (Hons) in Pathology. His early training featured placements at prestigious academic centres across the UK, including:
During his surgical training, Mr. Somers excelled academically, achieving prizewinner status in the FRCS examinations (1988).
In 1993, he completed two years of research into the immunological effects of surgery on cancer and other conditions. His groundbreaking work earned him an MD (Doctorate of Medicine) and the prestigious Hunterian Professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

Mr. Somers honed his skills in advanced gastrointestinal surgery and laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques during his senior training in London and Leeds. From 1995 to 1997, he held the position of Associate Professor of Surgery at the world-renowned Academic Surgery Unit of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
During this time, he gained invaluable experience in upper gastrointestinal surgery and innovative surgical techniques, further solidifying his reputation as a leader in the field.
Upon returning to the UK, Mr. Somers was appointed as a Consultant and Senior Lecturer in Surgery at St James’s Hospital in Leeds. In 1998, he became Chief of Upper GI Surgery at Queen Alexandra Hospital in Portsmouth, where he developed one of the leading upper GI surgery units in the UK.
Today, Mr. Somers balances his NHS work with independent practice, offering a range of specialist surgical treatments, including bariatric surgery and advanced upper gastrointestinal procedures.
