Theatre Healthcare Assistant (HCA)

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, variable shift pattern including early, late, and weekend shifts

We are looking for a dedicated Theatre Healthcare Assistant (HCA) to support our multidisciplinary team in the smooth and safe running of the operating theatre.
As a Theatre HCA, you will assist with the preparation and maintenance of the theatre environment before, during, and after surgical procedures. You will work closely with surgeons, anaesthetists, nurses, and other theatre staff to ensure patients are safely cared for throughout their surgical journey.
This is a key hands-on role requiring excellent attention to detail, a calm and caring approach, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
Assist with theatre preparation, including setting up instruments, equipment, and sterile environments
Transport patients to and from theatre, ensuring safe manual handling practices and patient dignity at all times
Support the scrub and circulating staff during surgical procedures as directed
Assist in positioning patients for surgery under clinical supervision
Monitor and restock theatre supplies and consumables to ensure smooth workflow
Perform cleaning, decontamination, and waste disposal tasks following infection prevention and control guidelines
Accurately complete and maintain records related to stock, cleaning, and patient movement
Respond promptly and professionally to requests from theatre and recovery staff
Maintain confidentiality, professionalism, and a compassionate manner in all interactions
Essential:
NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Health & Social Care (or equivalent)
Previous experience working as a Healthcare Assistant, preferably in a theatre, surgical, or acute care setting
Good understanding of infection control, health & safety, and manual handling practices
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to remain calm under pressure and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team
Physically fit and able to undertake standing, lifting, and moving duties
Reliable, punctual, and flexible with a positive “can-do” attitude
Desirable:
Experience within an operating theatre or day surgery unit
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Familiarity with theatre equipment and procedures
