Mr. Matthew Ward is a highly experienced Consultant ENT Surgeon at Portsmouth University Hospital NHS Trust, specialising in Head and Neck Cancer, Thyroid & Parathyroid Surgery, and Facial Skin Cancers. He provides expert care for all aspects of Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) diseases, combining cutting-edge surgical techniques with a patient-focused approach.
Mr. Ward’s advanced expertise includes robotic and laser-assisted surgery for head and neck cancer, ensuring the highest precision and best outcomes for his patients. His commitment to innovation and excellence has positioned him as one of the UK’s leading surgeons in thyroid and parathyroid surgery, where he utilises continuous intraoperative nerve monitoring, parathyroid autofluorescence, and rapid access parathyroid hormone testing.
He currently leads the Head & Neck and Thyroid Cancer multidisciplinary teams at Portsmouth University Hospital and serves as the Clinical Lead for Head & Neck Cancer at the Wessex Cancer Alliance.
Mr Ward completed his specialist ENT training in the Wessex region, working alongside leading surgeons in Hampshire, Dorset, and South East Wiltshire. In 2016, he passed his FRCS Examination in ENT Surgery with the highest score in the UK, earning him the prestigious Gold Medal.
Following his UK training, he completed a fellowship in Advanced Head & Neck and Skull Base Surgery at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane, Australia, under the mentorship of Professor Ben Panizza. He also underwent specialist training in robotic head & neck surgery in Philadelphia, USA.
In addition to his clinical expertise, Mr Ward is dedicated to medical research and academia. His groundbreaking research on prognostic markers in HPV-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma has been widely published and presented at national and international conferences.
