Gastroscopy

Medicana Health Group: Unveiling the Inner Workings of Your Digestive System

Gastroscopy: A Clear Look Inside

Gastroscopy, also known as an upper endoscopy, is a key diagnostic procedure that allows our expert gastroenterologists to examine the upper part of your digestive tract. This includes your esophagus (food pipe), stomach, and the first part of your small intestine (duodenum). This minimally invasive procedure offers a clear view of these areas, aiding in the diagnosis and management of various digestive conditions.

When a Gastroscopy May Be Recommended

Your doctor may suggest a gastroscopy if you’re experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Abdominal pain or discomfort
  • Persistent heartburn or indigestion
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Unexplained nausea or vomiting
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Blood in your vomit or stool

Expert Procedure & Swift Recovery

At Medicana Winchester Clinic, our gastroscopy procedure is performed by experienced endoscopists who prioritize your comfort and well-being.

  • Gentle Sedation Options: Most patients are offered a local anesthetic throat spray and the option of sedation to help you relax during the procedure.
  • Quick & Efficient: The procedure typically takes only 7-10 minutes. A thin, flexible tube with a camera is gently inserted through your mouth, allowing your doctor to visualize your digestive tract.
  • Accurate Diagnosis: The endoscopist can identify any abnormalities like inflammation, ulcers, or growths, and take tissue samples (biopsies) if necessary.
  • Rapid Recovery: You’ll be able to go home shortly after the procedure. If you haven’t received sedation, you can often resume normal activities the next day.

Gastroscopy FAQs: Addressing Your Concerns

A gastroscopy helps diagnose various conditions like ulcers, gastritis (inflammation of the stomach lining), and even early signs of cancer in the upper digestive tract. It can also be used to treat certain problems, such as stopping bleeding or removing polyps.

Most people experience minimal discomfort during the procedure, thanks to the use of local anesthetic and sedation options. You might feel a slight sore throat afterward, but this usually resolves quickly.

You’ll need to fast for a few hours before the procedure. Your doctor will provide you with detailed instructions on preparation, including any necessary adjustments to your medications.

Complications are rare but can include perforation (a tear in the lining of the digestive tract) or bleeding. Your doctor will discuss these risks with you beforehand.

Most people can return to their usual activities the day after the procedure. However, if you had sedation, you’ll need to avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours.

After Your Procedure

Recovery is usually quick. If you haven’t received sedation, you can typically resume normal activities the next day. If you were sedated, you’ll need someone to accompany you home and should avoid driving or operating machinery for 24 hours.

Your endoscopist will discuss the initial findings with you immediately after the procedure. If biopsies were taken, the results will be available within a few days and your doctor will discuss them with you.
